Talking to Your Doctor about Back Surgery Options

Talking to Your Doctor about Back Surgery Options

Suffering from back pain can take a toll on you physically and emotionally, and if it is severe enough, it can begin to significantly alter your daily routine and affect the quality of your life. There are numerous non-surgical treatment solutions that you may have tried to implement to alleviate your back pain but to no avail. If your back pain has not been responding to the treatments that you have been using, it may be time to speak with your doctor about surgery options that can be used to treat your back pain.

Communicating Effectively with Your Doctor

When you talk with your doctor, you want to be sure that they have a clear picture of the type of pain you are experiencing. In addition to any medical tests that may be conducted, this information can help your doctor suggest the most appropriate type of surgical treatment for your back pain. Here are some additional tips for communicating with your doctor:

  • Don’t hesitate to express your concerns and feelings about the solutions your doctor may suggest.
  • Be prepared to take notes or have someone come with you to note what the doctor is saying.
  • If needed, you may also want to ask your doctor to provide you with written instructions.
  • Feel free to ask more questions and to ask your doctor to expand on their answers if there is anything that you do not understand.

Before you visit your doctor, take the time to write down a list of questions you want answered. Be sure to review the list at least once before your appointment.

What to Ask?

Before you visit your doctor, take the time to write down a list of questions you want answered. Be sure to review the list at least once before your appointment. Questions you want to ask may include:

  • What type of surgery do you suggest and why? Your spine surgeon should provide you with a thorough explanation of the surgical solution, detailing what occurs at each step of the procedure. You will want to ask why your doctor proposes a particular procedure and how it will be able to help you. Ask specifically about the benefits of the surgical procedure and how long they should last.
  • What are the risks? Even the most minor surgeries can present multiple risks to a patient, which is why it is necessary to always compare any possible benefits with the complications that could arise. These complications could include adverse side effects, infections and more. There should also be a discussion regarding post-surgical pain management.
